Jack Fitzwater took over the Exeter City captaincy in the summer

  • Published15 minutes ago

Exeter City will be without captain Jack Fitzwater for their FA Cup first-round tie at League One leaders Huddersfield Town.

The 29-year-old has been an ever-present in the Grecians' side this season.

But he will be missing after undergoing what manager Matt Taylor says is a "procedure on a toe injury".

It is unclear how long the injury will keep the experienced central defender out for.

"He's our captain, our leader, our most consistent player to date, but with everything it's an opportunity elsewhere," Taylor told BBC Radio Devon.

"Ed James was unlucky to lose his place in the starting line-up when he went away on international duty.

"He's ready and available, we can move Luca (Woodhouse) inside, we can play Vinny (Harper), we've got options in terms of that and there's a lot of players who need to perform soon and need to perform well and Ed and Vinny and people like that, they certainly fit that bill.

"So I'm looking forward to seeing how we adapt without Fitzy and also being able to give him a little bit of a break from the league."
