America Just Sent Another Nuclear Carrier to the Middle East | USS George Washington

The USS George Washington has taken over the U.S. carrier mission in the Middle East, bringing nuclear-powered endurance, combat aircraft and a powerful mobile airbase to the region.

The USS George Washington has taken over the U.S. Navy’s carrier presence in the Middle East, moving into the Arabian Sea as Washington shifts a veteran carrier strike group into an active operational role. The move keeps a U.S. carrier force on station as the Abraham Lincoln heads home after an exceptionally long deployment.

But George Washington is hardly a newcomer.

The Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, commissioned in 1992, is roughly 1,092 feet long and displaces around 100,000 tons fully loaded. Its two nuclear reactors provide the power to propel the ship at more than 30 knots while supporting thousands of personnel and a complete carrier air wing.

And that air wing is what turns the ship into a floating airbase.

Today, George Washington operates with Carrier Air Wing 5, including F/A-18E and F/A-18F Super Hornets, F-35C Lightning IIs, EA-18G Growlers for electronic warfare, and E-2D Hawkeyes for airborne early warning and command.

The carrier also recently reached a major aviation milestone: its 200,000th fixed-wing aircraft recovery while operating in the Indian Ocean, a measure of just how much flight-deck activity these ships accumulate over decades of service.

The significance is bigger than a simple handover. A carrier strike group brings its own fighters, electronic warfare aircraft, airborne radar, logistics and command infrastructure — allowing the Navy to generate sustained combat power far from American bases.

And George Washington is now doing exactly that.
