USS North Dakota spent 40 months undergoing maintenance. Its overhaul highlights the challenges facing America’s submarine fleet — and the massive operational costs of maintenance delays.

The USS North Dakota is back with the U.S. Navy after spending roughly 40 months undergoing a major maintenance overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. As the first Virginia-class Block III submarine to undergo this type of depot-level maintenance there, the overhaul presented unique challenges for the shipyard. At the same time, a government report highlighted more than 15,000 operational submarine-days lost across the U.S. attack-submarine fleet because of maintenance delays. This video looks inside North Dakota’s lengthy overhaul, the changes that made Block III different, and what this experience could mean for maintaining America’s growing fleet of nuclear-powered attack submarines.
