While you best not even think aboutmessin’ with Apple’s iDVD application, Apple hopes that youwillwant to play around withRendezvous, Apple’s answer to universal Plug-n-Play (uPnP). The technology is aimed at increasing the ease by which users can identify devices and services on any given network, be it a printer attached to a LAN or possibly even BlueTooth devices (a phone, MP3 player, toaster oven). Rather than license out the technology,Apple is releasingboth the core of Rendezvous and the OS X implementation in the hopes that developers will add the technology to their own products. While it is not yet clear what license the technology will be released under, chances are that it will be released under theApple Public Source License, the same license thatDarwinis under. Count this as a smart, if not necessary move on Apple’s part.
