Houthis Captured U.S.-Made MRAPs — Here’s What They Got
MilitaryGet your news fromINTERESTING ENGINEERINGHouthis have reportedly captured U.S.-made M-ATVs and other armored vehicles. Built to survive mines and roadside bombs, these machines now offer protected mobility to Houthi forces.
U.S.-made MRAPs are now showing up in the hands of Houthi forces, giving the group access to vehicles originally designed for some of the most dangerous battlefields in the world.
Among the vehicles reportedly captured are the M-ATV, or MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle, along with other U.S.-built mine-resistant armored platforms. Reports have also identified NIMR Ajban 440 light patrol vehicles in Houthi hands.
The M-ATV was designed around one central problem: surviving explosions.
Its V-shaped hull helps deflect blast energy away from the crew compartment, while heavy armor provides protection against small-arms fire and fragments. Unlike earlier MRAPs built mainly for roads, the M-ATV was developed with a more mobile suspension and off-road capability for difficult terrain.
That combination made it valuable for patrols, convoy protection and operations in areas where mines and improvised explosive devices were major threats.
But these vehicles are now being used by an entirely different force.
Captured armored vehicles can give the Houthis protected mobility without having to develop and manufacture an equivalent vehicle from scratch. They can also provide useful battlefield equipment for transport, patrol and security missions.
And that makes every captured MRAP more than just a trophy — it is a transfer of capability.
