How AI drone boats Chased an Intruder Out of Their Zone
TransportationGet your news fromINTERESTING ENGINEERINGShield AI’s Hivemind AI pilot has completed its first multi-boat autonomous teaming mission on water, running two Thunder Tiger SeaShark drone boats in a demonstration at Dapeng Bay in southern Taiwan.
Two drone boats just found an intruder and drove it out of their patrol zone and nobody was steering.
These are SeaShark boats from Taiwan’s Thunder Tiger, running Shield AI’s Hivemind as their AI pilot.
Hivemind has already piloted more than 30 platforms, from F-16s to helicopters to drone boats.
In July, at Dapeng Bay in southern Taiwan, it took charge of two SeaSharks: a six-metre 600 and an eight-metre 800.
The operator set one mission: search the area, find anything suspicious and push it out.
From there, Hivemind took over. It split the zone in two and gave each boat its own sector and route.
It combined radar, camera imagery and AIS, the signal ships broadcast to say who and where they are.
When one boat spotted a speedboat playing the intruder, it tracked it and shared the data.
The second boat plotted its own intercept and moved in. Together, they escorted it out of the zone.
Shield AI calls it Hivemind’s first multi-boat teaming mission on water. Getting it onto the boats took about six weeks.
Why does it matter? Taiwan is an island with a lot of sea to watch, and only so many crews to watch it.
With software like this, a person sets the goal and the boats work out the rest.
Next up: more sensors, bigger teams and the open ocean.
