Inside Photon Matrix and Tornyol: How do these ‘mosquito killers’ work

Two startups are hunting the same insect with opposite machines. Photon Matrix, a Chinese company, sells a shelf-sized box that scans a room with lidar and fires a laser at mosquito-shaped targets.

What happened when we posted about two completely different startups that focus on different techniques for killing one of the world’s smallest animals?

A lot of engagement… and skepticism about whether these machines are really for killing mosquitos or something more…

Two completely different machines. One target.

In China, Photon Matrix has built a small box roughly the size of a book. It sits on a shelf, scans the room with lidar, and fires a laser at anything mosquito-shaped flying past.

In Paris, a Y Combinator startup called Tornyol has built a 40-gram drone that listens for mosquito wingbeats with sonar and kills them by flying straight into them.

While one waits and monitors… the other one chases.

And within days of both going public, the comment sections landed on the same observation: Detect. Track. Aim. Kill.

That is the sequence an air defence system runs, shrunk to the size of an insect.
