Sony is enjoying a sharp profit spike in its latest quarterly financials, largely driven by its PlayStation business and the blockbuster success ofSpider-Man: Brand New Day. According to the company’sSeptember earnings, Sony’s net profits climbed to 449.60 billion yen (about $2.84 billion) for the three months ended September — a 44 percent increase compared to the 311.4 billion yen ($1.96 billion) it reported for the same period last year.
Spider-Man: Brand New Daywas a notable contributor, which released in July and became the third-highest grossing movie in history by earning $2.52 billion at the global box office. That’s a huge boost for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which posted earnings of $581 million for the three months ended September — a 527 percent jump from the $93 million it reported for the same period in 2025.
Sales of Playstation 5 consoles have fallen, with 2.6 million units reported this second quarter compared to the 4 million that were sold in Q2 2025. While the Sony-exclusiveMarvel’s Wolverinesold 2.4 million unitsagainst a reported budget of $300 million, PlayStation game sales generally have increased for both digital downloads and physical discs. That’s in spite of theweek-long player blackoutthat took place in August to protest Sony’s plan toditch discs entirely. Looking forward, PlayStation is now looking at its next generation console, which developers are making “solid progress” onaccording to Sony CFO Lin Tao, and is “progressing as scheduled.”
