If you’re an Outlook 2000/XP user and haven’t triedSpamNet, you’re missing out. We first mentioned the peer-to-peer spam killerback in August, and since then the program has continued to improve and impress. Yesterday Beta 1.0 6dwas released, so head on over andgrab/updateit at your convenience. I’m mentioning the update now for two reasons: first, "AutoUpdate" isn’t working, so all of you using at least 6b and earlier wouldn’t know this was out there unless you checked. The second reason I’m mentioning it is simply to evangelize it. It works. Really well. (OMG Caesar just wrote a sentence without a verb!!).
This week SpamNet has filtered 3984 messages and detected 413 spam messages for me. And here’s the kicker, that’safterour mail server nuked 1435 other spam messages usingSpamAssassin. So SpamNet is catching stuff that doesn’t violate the Assassin’s rules, mostly because it relies on the human peer-to-peer element. I’ve had two false positives with SpamNet since I started using it. That’s acceptable for me because the amount of spam I get more or less leads me to accidentally delete and/or ignore stuff. And for those of you who run mail servers, I can’t recommendSpamAssassinenough.
