Superintelligence in construction?

San Francisco startup Gritt says it is creating a construction superintelligence that can build in decades what would take centuries today. For now, its AI drives off-the-shelf robotic arms mounted on skid steers and forklifts to install solar panels, which Gritt says lets a crew place roughly four times as many panels a day. Backed by $32.4 million, it plans to move into data centers and large infrastructure next.

A San Francisco startup says it’s creating a construction superintelligence.

The goal is to build in decades what would take centuries today.

About two in five US construction workers are expected to retire by 2031.

And output per construction worker fell roughly 40 percent between 1970 and 2020.

Gritt’s AI runs off-the-shelf robotic arms, mounted on skid steers and forklifts already on the jobsite.

Job one is solar farms.

The machine unloads heavy glass panels, carries them to the racks and lines them up to within a millimetre. Workers just fasten them in place.

Gritt says a typical eight-person crew installs about 800 panels a day. With its system, that same crew can do 3,000 to 4,000.

And the AI is built to generalize. In one case, Gritt says it taught a robot to tie rebar in two days.

Data centers and large infrastructure are next.

The company has raised $32.4 million and says it’s working with three of America’s top 10 power contractors.

So, superintelligence? Not yet. Today, it mostly places solar panels on a handful of sites.

But if one AI can keep picking up new site jobs in days, that’s a bet worth watching.
