The M1E3 is a radically redesigned Abrams with an unmanned turret, three-person crew, hybrid powertrain and lighter weight, built to address the changing demands of modern armored warfare.

The U.S. Army is developing the M1E3, a radically redesigned successor to the M1A2 Abrams. After decades of upgrades pushed the Abrams toward higher weight and fuel demands, the Army chose to start over with a new unmanned turret, three-person crew and hybrid-electric powertrain. The M1E3 is targeting a much lower weight while adding an active protection system and modular architecture designed for future upgrades. With prototypes moving toward testing with soldiers, the new tank represents the biggest redesign of the Abrams family in decades — changing not just what sits above the hull, but what powers it underneath.
