TheSociety for Information Displayrecently held a conference in Tokyo where a lot of technologies that have been just around the corner for what seems like forever finally appear to be making their way towards the market. ThisAsiaBizTech reportsums it up for you, and even includes a projected roadmap for some of these technologies. According to the report, it looks like Organic EL displays are coming along and may start to find more widespread use soon. Despite the fact that they’re supposedly being used in some phones, I’ve yet to see one with my own eyes. But then again, I don’t live in Japan. And then there’s the whole electronic ink thing, which is finally starting to move out of the perpetually “five years away” category. EInk hasannounced a color versionof their electronic ink tech, and they claim it’s slated for commercialization around 2004. Speaking of things I’d like to see for myself, that color e-ink ranks up there. EInk is located here in Cambridge, so maybe I’ll try to contact them and go check it out. The ABT report also covers flexible display tech, which still seems to be a bit further out than the other stuff covered. Thankfully, it’s also the tech that I find the least interesting for whatever reason.
