The U.S. Needs More C-17s — But There’s a Problem

The U.S. Air Force is considering restarting C-17 production after the aircraft’s 2015 production shutdown, while also studying upgrades and a possible next-generation airlifter.

The U.S. Air Force is studying whether to restart production of the C-17 Globemaster III, more than a decade after the production line closed. With around 220 C-17s expected to remain in service for decades, the Air Force is weighing new production against continued upgrades and maintenance — or developing the Next-Generation Airlift aircraft. Congress has asked for a feasibility study by March 1, 2027.
