This 55W Desktop CO2 Laser Cutter Aligns Itself

InnovationGet your news fromINTERESTING ENGINEERING

Bambu Lab, best known for its 3D printers, has launched the R1, its first dedicated laser cutter, built around a 55W CO2 laser and a 600 by 300 mm bed. It uses a sensor on the toolhead and motorised mirrors to align its own optical path in about a minute, a job usually done by hand on CO2 lasers.

Lining up the mirrors on a CO2 laser usually means test shots, tiny screws and a lot of patience.

Bambu Lab’s new R1 does it itself, in about a minute.

It’s the 3D printer maker’s first dedicated laser cutter, a 55-watt CO2 machine with a 60 by 30 centimetre bed.

The company claims that it cuts acrylic up to 20 millimetres thick in a single pass.

A toolhead sensor reads where the beam lands, and motorised mirrors correct it.

Cameras, lasers and encoders place each cut within 0.2 millimetres.

It costs 2,499 dollars, and starts shipping in October.
