The F-16 is getting a new one-box IFF system with secure Mode 5 identification, designed to help pilots distinguish friendly aircraft from potential threats during combat.

The F-16 is getting a new Identification Friend or Foe system from BAE Systems, designed to help pilots securely distinguish friendly aircraft from potential threats. The AN/APX-127(V)1 combines interrogation and transponder functions in one box and can serve as a drop-in replacement for several existing systems. With Mode 5 encryption and an open architecture for software updates, the upgrade is designed to modernize F-16 identification without major hardware changes.
