Utah-based OSH Cut lets engineers upload a design, get an instant price, and order laser-cut sheet metal and CNC-bent tubes with no minimum order.

How do you turn a flat metal sheet or a straight tube into a precise part? A Utah shop called OSH Cut does it in two steps.

First, light. Its fibre lasers focus 8 to 10 kilowatts onto a tiny spot, melting through metal up to one inch thick while a gas jet blows the molten metal out of the cut. The company says parts hold within five thousandths of an inch.

Then, bending. Metal stretches on the outside of every bend, so software works back from the 3D model to the exact straight length needed.

And before a tube touches the machine, each bend is simulated, so it never swings into the bender.
