A skipper who champions sustainable Cornish sardines has been named Fishing Hero of the Year at a national awards ceremony.

Tom Lambourn, from Newlyn, Cornwall, received the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) UK award at a gala dinner at London's Fishmongers' Hall earlier this week.

He was recognised by the judges for his dedication to promoting the small scale Cornish sardine fishery.

In his acceptance speech, Lambourn said it was "brilliant to be part of a sustainable fishery".

The 30-year-old skipper, who left the coastal town to study for a chemistry degree, said he was drawn back by the pull of the ocean and now captains his own sardine boat, the Lyonesse, throughout the sardine season from July to April.

Lambourn was also credited for a decision taken by Paradise Park to feed their penguins Cornish sardines rather than sprats.

He said: "I'm really proud to accept this award and represent the fantastic Cornish sardine fishery.

"Sustainable fishing means that the future generations of my family will also be able to fish.

"It's so important to educate young people about the importance of the MSC and being certified."

Lewis Tattersall, MSC UK and Ireland senior fisheries outreach manager, said: "The judges could not help but be impressed by Tom's enthusiasm and effectiveness in championing the product he and his crew land but also the lengths to which they go to ensure stocks remain healthy and the Cornish coastline and its abundant sea life remains pristine.

"Tom is a very worthy Fishing Hero of the Year."
