The U.S. Navy’s new Low-Profile Mast gives Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines 360-degree visible and infrared imaging, providing a new way to see above water while submerged.

The U.S. Navy is giving its nuclear-powered submarines a new way to see above the water. L3Harris has received a $139 million contract for Low-Profile Mast systems featuring high-definition visible and infrared cameras with 360-degree viewing. Designed for Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines, the telescoping sensors can provide detailed imagery while the submarine remains submerged, offering crews greater situational awareness without relying on traditional optical periscopes.
