Russia’s new Pantsir-SMD-E is built around one problem: drone swarms. With a much larger interceptor load, it aims to keep air defenses fighting longer against mass UAV attacks.

Russia is developing a new version of the Pantsir air-defense system specifically for the growing threat from drone swarms. The Pantsir-SMD-E replaces the traditional cannon armament with a much larger missile load, potentially carrying up to 48 compact anti-drone interceptors. The redesign reflects a major shift in modern air defense: dealing with waves of relatively cheap UAVs requires more affordable interceptors, deeper ammunition reserves and greater capacity to withstand saturation attacks.
