On August 26, 2026, a series of avalanches, flash floods, and debris flows in Nepal and Tibet left an estimated 1,400 people dead, with another 5,850 still missing. Dubbed the 2026 Nepal-China floods, the disaster destroyed the China-Nepal Gyirong checkpoint and devastated dozens of settlements along a 45-mile (72 km) stretch of the Trishuli River.
The event also severely damaged around a dozen hydropower plants, constituting around 10% of Nepal’s total power production.According to reports, it is not yet clear if the damage can be repaired.
