Fering’s Pioneer X is a new British 6×6 hybrid military vehicle capable of carrying 2 tonnes, providing silent electric mobility and exporting power for equipment in the field.

The British hybrid vehicle maker Fering is taking its Pioneer off-road vehicle into international markets — with its first export orders already secured.

The company has sold prototype vehicles to Canada and an undisclosed Middle Eastern country, where they will undergo testing. Fering says Canada could potentially lead to larger follow-on orders.

At the Defence Vehicle Dynamics show, the company also unveiled the Pioneer X, a new six-wheeled version designed to carry more payload.

Adding a third axle increases the vehicle’s weight by around 250 kilograms, but boosts payload capacity by an additional one tonne. The Pioneer X weighs around 2.3 tonnes and can carry up to 2 tonnes of payload.

The vehicle is built around a hybrid powertrain combining a generator with a battery pack. Fering says the four-wheeled Pioneer can travel up to 7,000 kilometers, while offering around 80 kilometers of silent electric-only driving.

The system can also export up to 60 kilowatts of electrical power, allowing the vehicle to operate equipment such as a forward outpost without a separate generator.

Fering is now pitching the Pioneer X for the British Army’s Light Mobility Vehicle program, while moving toward design-for-manufacture and planning for potential production expansion.

If selected, the Pioneer could move from an experimental hybrid vehicle to a larger military mobility platform.
