What Is Stringman? The Ceiling Robot That Tidies Your Room

Stringman, from engineer Nathaniel Nifong’s Neufangled Robotics, hangs a two-fingered gripper from four lines strung to the corners of a room’s ceiling.

This robot tidies your room while hanging from your ceiling. It’s called Stringman.

It’s built by engineer Nathaniel Nifong’s company, Neufangled Robotics.

So how does it work?

Two motorised anchors, styled like crown moulding, go up in opposite corners. Each drives two lines, and eyelets in the other two corners guide them.

All four lines meet at a small box, with a two-fingered gripper hanging below.

Change the line lengths, and the gripper moves almost anywhere in the room.

Cameras in the anchors track markers on that box, the motors report how much line is out, and software blends both to pinpoint the gripper and cancel its swing.

Clip-on tags mark your hamper, toy box or bin. Right now, it can pick laundry off the floor and drop it in the hamper on its own.

It lifts up to 2 kilos near the floor, runs off wall power, and it’s fully open source.

The assembled version costs $965

As Neufangled puts it, you don’t need a humanoid to pick up things on the floor.

The catch? It needs a computer at home as its brain, and new tasks, you teach it yourself with a gamepad.
