Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled plans for a temporary 50,000-seat stadium in Madrid for Shakira’s 11-show residency this fall. Shakira Stadium at Macondo Park is being built with Shakira and Live Nation for her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. After the residency, the venue will be taken down, making it a unique, short-term concert space.
Thestadiumis being built just for Shakira’s Madrid shows, not adapted from another arena. It will hold 30,000 seated fans and 20,000 standing. BIG architect Agustín Pérez Torres said the design aims to create a bigger and better concert experience than past temporary venues.
A standout feature of thestadiumwill be a massive LED screen system that BIG says is new to Europe. The stage will include familiar elements from earlier parts of Shakira’s tour, like a long catwalk and designs by Yellow Studio. This setup will help the audience feel close to the performance, even in such a large space.
Macondo gives it a Colombian identity
The name Macondo Park has a strong literary link to Colombia. Macondo is the fictional town in Gabriel García Márquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. This setting is closely tied to the author's home region, and the real town of Aracataca is less than 100 miles from Barranquilla, Shakira's birthplace.
A 21-hectare concert site
The stadium will be set up on part of the 21-hectare Iberdrola Music site in Madrid. This area already hosts major music festivals, so the project can grow beyond the stadium. BIG has designed the space around the stadium to give fans more to enjoy before the show starts.
Markets and food around the venue
On show days, the area will become a festival-style destination for up to 12 hours. Curated artisan markets and food vendors will line the site, giving visitors places to spend time before entering the stadium. The arrangement is intended to make the entire visit part of the event rather than limiting the experience to the performance.
Spaces designed for families
Children will also have dedicated play areas around the venue. Shakira's sons are involved in curating these spaces, adding a personal element to the wider site design. Families attending the shows will therefore have activities available outside the main concert area during the extended opening hours.
Recycled fabric shapes the paths
Curved pedestrian routes will connect the different parts of Macondo Park. Some of these paths will be covered with colorful recycled fabrics, creating shaded areas while adding visual links to Shakira's stage production. The design uses temporary materials and structures that can be removed when the residency ends.
Green islands bring Latin America outdoors
The site will also include landscaped "green islands" inspired by environments across Spain and Latin America. These park-like areas extend themes from Shakira's performance into the surrounding grounds. The concept reflects the tour's focus on women and Latin American identity while giving fans outdoor spaces to explore between activities.
More than half a million tickets sold
More than 500,000 tickets have already been sold for Shakira's Madrid shows, with the residency expected to sell out. BIG describes the temporary stadium as an immersive expression of contemporary Latin identity. Once the final performance ends, the structure will disappear, leaving the concert series as the project's intended legacy.
